Women’s Wednesday: Folia’s new column!

Folia Magazine presents a new, all-female weekly column: Women’s Wednesday! Every Wednesday we will be bringing your attention to an illumination taken from one of the many copies of Giovanni Boccaccio’s De Mulieribus Claris: 106 women, both historical and mythical, positive and negative, will thus lead us in our journey through the pages of history. With each and every illumination, just like in Boccaccio’s original work, we will be giving you a short biography of the woman of the week.

This column aims to bring one of Boccaccio’s most significative works back to light, as well as some of the most beautiful illuminations inspired by the De Mulieribus Claris. We start by symbolically introducing the new column to you in true Women’s Wednesday fashion: the illumination above, in fact, depicts the presentation of a copy of the De Mulieribus Claris to Louise of Savoy, Duchess of Angoulême and, a few years after the manuscript was composed, twice Regent of France.

Illumination from the manuscript “De Mulieribus Claris”, decorated by Robinet Testard, ms. Français 599, f. 2v, 1488-1496, Bibliothèque Nationale de France, Département des Manuscrits, Paris.
