CHARLES V’S BANQUET

Banchetto di Carlo IV

"Charles V's banquet", illumination from the manuscript "Grandes Chroniques de France", ms. Français 2813, f. 473v, ca. 1375-1380, Bibliothèque nationale de France, Paris.

This illumination depicts the banquet offered by Charles V of France in honor of Charles IV, emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, during his visit in 1378. Charles V, wearing blue brocade, sits between Charles IV (wearing red, on his right) and the Emperor's son Wenceslas (on his left). The banquet features entertainers re-enacting the First Crusade - namely the arrival of Godfrey of Bouillon in the Holy Land and the conquest and liberation of Jerusalem from the Saracens.
